Base Piece Hair Extensions: A Complete Guide for Salons & Wholesale Buyers (2026)

Base Piece Hair Extensions: A Complete Guide for Salons & Wholesale Buyers (2026)

If you're searching for virgin hair extensions for custom coloring or trying to find a wholesale supplier that offers unprocessed human hair, this guide explains why hair with zero artificial pigment lasts longer and gives you full color freedom—we call it base piece.

We developed the Base Piece system back in 2014. Here is why.

Salon owners kept telling us the same thing. They would order pre-colored extensions from a supplier, hold them up against a client's head, and realize the shade was off. Again. They tried bleaching and toning, but the hair had already been through two or three chemical cycles at the factory. It was damaged before they even started.

So we asked a simple question. What if we sent the hair completely raw, with zero factory color? Let the salon do one single color cycle themselves, on fresh hair that had never been touched by chemicals.

That was the beginning of the Base Piece.

What Is a Base Piece Hair Extension?

A base piece is made from 100% virgin human hair with no artificial color added. The cuticle is intact and fully aligned. The hair has never been through any chemical processing.

You take this raw extension and make it whatever your client needs. Bleach it. Tone it. Style it. One cycle, controlled by you, on untouched hair.

Compare that to a standard pre-colored weft. It goes through factory dyeing (cycle one), maybe toning (cycle two), then shipping. By the time you install it, the hair has been chemically processed two or three times. Each cycle strips the cuticle. Each cycle shortens the lifespan.

A base piece skips all of that. You control the process from start to finish.

The ColorBase 6-Level System

To make base pieces practical for everyday salon use, we built a standardized color system. We sort our virgin hair into six lightness levels. Each one corresponds to a specific volume of developer for reaching a target shade.

Level Name Starting Color Best For
1 Natural Black Deepest black Dark tones, no lift needed
4 Dark Brown Rich brown Brunette shades, minor lift
6 Medium Brown Mid-brown Caramel, chestnut, balayage
9 Golden Brown Warm brown Honey tones, warm blondes
18 Honey Blonde Light blonde Ash tones, platinum, pastels
27 Bright Blonde Very light blonde Silver, icy blonde, vivid colors

Why this matters. A Level 6 Medium Brown base lifted with 20 volume developer gives you a predictable caramel tone. Same base with 30 volume gives you light brown. No guesswork. No test strands. You know the result before you start.

New to custom coloring? Start with a Level 18 Honey Blonde. It is light enough to tone in any direction and forgiving enough to practice on.

Base Piece vs Pre-Colored: What Is Different

Less chemical damage

Pre-colored hair goes through multiple factory dye baths before it reaches you. Each one opens the cuticle and strips protein. By the time you install it, the structure is already weakened. A base piece has zero processing. You color it once. That is it. The cuticle stays sealed.

Longer lifespan

Pre-colored extensions typically last 6 to 9 months. Base piece extensions last 12 to 18 months. Double the life, for one simple reason: fewer chemical cycles means the hair structure stays intact longer.

Better color match

Factory dyeing is done in bulk. Color looks consistent within one batch, but the next batch can be different. And factory colors are generic, not matched to any real client. When you custom color a base piece, you mix the exact formula your client needs. The match is precise.

Heat styling and daily wear

Base piece hair keeps more natural moisture because the cuticle layers are still intact. That means it holds a curl better, tangles less, and responds to heat styling the way natural hair does. Clients who use flat irons or curling wands notice the difference within the first week.

Can be re-colored

Pre-colored hair is done after the first dye job. Trying to re-color it causes significant damage. A base piece can be lifted and toned over its lifespan, because the cuticle was never compromised to begin with.

Why Salons and Distributors Are Switching

We have seen a clear shift over the past three years. More salons are moving away from stocking twenty shades of pre-colored wefts and moving toward the base piece model.

Less inventory. Carry six base levels and a set of professional colorants instead of every shade imaginable. Your shelf space drops by roughly 80%.

Better margins. You control the final product. The markup on a custom-colored extension is healthier than selling a pre-packaged weft.

Fewer returns. The number one reason extensions get returned is wrong color. When you custom color, that problem mostly disappears. Some salons we work with have seen return rates drop by over half.

Repeat clients. Once a client experiences a perfect color match from a custom-colored base piece, they do not go back to generic pre-colored extensions.

How to Color Base Piece Hair Extensions

If you are new to base pieces, here is a simple workflow.

Step 1 — Choose your base level based on the target color. Going blonde? Start at Level 18 or 27. Going brown? Level 4 or 6.

Step 2 — Bleach if needed with the right developer volume. Level 6 to caramel takes 20 volume. Level 9 to light blonde takes 30 volume.

Step 3 — Tone and deep condition. Neutralize any warmth with a professional toner. Deep condition afterward since the cuticle opens during bleaching.

Step 4 — Dry and style. The hair is ready for installation.

After a few sessions, you will know exactly which base level and developer combination works for each client.

How to Choose a Base Piece Supplier

Not all virgin hair is the same quality. Here is what to check.

Cuticle alignment — Non-negotiable. If cuticles are not aligned, the hair will tangle and mat within weeks. Ask directly. A vague answer means no.

Donor source — Hair from young donors (teens to early twenties) has the strongest cuticle. Ask about the source and age group.

Color range — A serious base piece supplier should offer at least six lightness levels. If they only stock black and dark brown, they are not set up for this.

Samples — You should be able to order samples of each level before buying bulk. If a supplier pushes for a minimum order without samples, move on.

Lead time — Standard is 7 to 15 days for basic colors. Custom blending adds 3 to 5 days. Longer than that probably means no in-house manufacturing.

MOQ — Our minimum is 100g per color level for first orders. We recommend starting with samples and a small trial order first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you tone a base piece without bleach?

Yes, if you are going darker than the starting level. A Level 18 Honey Blonde base can be toned to ash blonde with a high-lift toner and no bleach. Going lighter always requires bleach.

How long do base piece extensions last?

12 to 18 months with proper care. The hair has only been chemically processed once, compared to two or three cycles for pre-colored hair.

Do base pieces work with all extension types?

Yes. They can be made into tape-ins, nano tips, genius wefts, clip-ins, I-tips, and feather wefts. The attachment method does not matter.

What is the difference between a base piece and regular virgin hair?

All base pieces are virgin hair, but not all virgin hair is a base piece. The term refers specifically to virgin hair sorted into standardized lightness levels for professional custom coloring. That sorting is what makes the system work.

Can you ship internationally?

Yes. We ship worldwide from Qingdao, China. Air freight takes 3 to 7 days.  We handle customs documentation.
